Non-cardinal ranking (suggestions only YMMV):
Baratza Encore Grinder: At $199 my friends know this as the least expensive grinder I’m currently willing to recommend.
Do I own it:
No, mine is more expensive, but I have used it and its conincal-burr-grinder is capable of making any style of coffee.Kalita Wave 185: ~$35 in stainless steel; an absolute steal - hands down the most versatile and high-quality coffee brewing device in existence! Yup, you heard it here first. Equally regarded in a Michelin-star restaurant or in your backpack as you hike The Catskills, its flat-bottom idiot-proofs your pouring somewhat, while still offering enough artistic creativity for even the most nerdy baristas.
Do I own it:
HYFRKalita Wave filters: $0.14 / filter - They doin’ it for the sludge.
Do I own it:
yesGooseneck Electric Kettle: $66 on Amazon. It doesn’t matter the heat source or brand but the gooseneck is not only attractive but also essential; to control your pour-over.
Do I own it:
yesWater: $ 0 - but is anything really 🆓 ?
Ice: $ 0 - unless you pay for refrigeration.
Vacuum container: $31+ - This will easily double the lifespan of your whole-bean coffee. Try to avoid the purchase or storage of ground coffee. No judgement - however from a chemistry perspective - ground coffee has more surface area to oxidize. Oxidation = Bad.
Do I own it:
yesScale: ~$20 on Amazon. There are myriad options and they are all fine. This is another essential item for which you do not have to pay much at all. Don’t sleep on this tool.
Do I own it:
yes
It will be easy to convince yourself that you are already doing more than enuff in buying the other items - there is just no way you are gonna weigh coffee beans. Metric system!? Awww hell nah!!! However …
The scale enables you to follow or make coffee recipes. Yup, you know those things that involve measurements and ratios and ingredients and instructional steps.
Unless you already have barista-level pattern recognition, I recommend you initially follow a recipe to dial-in your personal favorite brew. Without measuring things, how can you iterate?
Nah …
O.P.C. $50 on this website
Do I own it:
yes and yes.
The Recipe
Ratio: 10 parts water (in mL) / 1 part coffee (in grams)
This is my preferred ratio for pour-over. It’s on the strong side for most so you might want to start with 12:1 or 15:1
If you don’t want to do math then Yeh mi now!
A Coffee Poem
Put the kettle on Grind 15 G's Slide that wavy in the Kalita Grounds hittin’ paper like I’m settin’ up the stage Level out the bed, keep it smooth, no clumps, Keep it clean, no mistake Tare the scale. pour it slow, 150 for the taste I make. Slow with the neck, let it drip, no rush 150 on the scale, watch the coffee start to blush
I almost forgot - this is Iced Coffee!
Go back to the beginning and drop 75 mL of ice-cubes in your glass before putting the Kalita Wave on top of it. And then - yup - you got this - brew with 75 mL of hot-water … because you know ice is also water. Or is water ice …
Enjoy.
Thank you for this! Book marking it.
